Arrested along with Khristine Eroshevich, and Sandeep Kapoor in March 2009, and charged by then-California Attorney General Jerry Brown of illegally furnishing medications to Anna Nicole Smith. In October 2010, a jury acquitted Kapoor, but found Stern and Eroshevich guilty of two counts of felony conspiracy. The charges against Stern and Eroshevich were dismissed in January 2011.

Fought with both Larry Birkhead and Virgie Hart for custody of Anna Nicole Smith's baby girl Dannielynn. A paternity test proved, without a doubt, that Larry was Dannielynn's natural father and he was awarded custody of the girl. Virgie launched an appeal to gain custody of her granddaughter but the custody order was upheld and Larry was allowed to leave the Bahamas with his daughter.
