Famous tuba player Roger Bobo has unfortunately passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at 84. It was announced on Facebook by Arcangelo Fiorello, a tuba soloist, who wrote, “Today is an unfortunate day; the legend and the tuba soloist Roger Bobo has gone away.”
His death’s true cause had not been made public. Everyone is grieving, missing and remembering Roger, and they are expressing their sorrow and condolences to him on social media.
“The news of dear Roger Bobo’s passing broke my heart. We had worked together at the RNCM in Manchester where we had known one another for a long time. He was, of course, an inspiration there. My friend, RIP.”
Roger Bobo was born on June 8, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, the United States. The Eastman School of Music awarded Roger a Bachelor of Music degree. He decided to concentrate more on conducting and teaching in 2001; therefore, he ceased actively playing the tuba. His first solo tuba performance ever took place in Carnegie Recital Hall.
His extensive discography comprises both solo and group projects. His book, Mastering the Tuba, was published by Editions Bim (CH). He worked as the Topanga Philharmonic Orchestra’s resident conductor while in the country.
Bobo runs many online courses and lessons. He spent all of 2018 living in Tokyo, Japan, where he had a position as a lecturer at the Musashino Academy of Music.
Roger Bobo has performed as a soloist and directed and trained brass sections in orchestras worldwide as they prepared a significant body of symphonic repertoire throughout his career.
Roger Bobo has developed a solid resume by working with and studying under some of the best conductors in the world. He made close acquaintances with the numerous world-famous artists who led the Los Angeles Philharmonic over his 25 years there, including conductors Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, and Andre Previn.
